Christmas Vacation 2011
What can I say? It was a good time. I ran around like crazy (like I do every time I am back home) trying to see all my relatives and catch up. I was determined to get some good outdoor exercise even if there wasn't enough snow to snowshoe.
I decided to go "walk the dam" as it is called. The Woodcock Dam (yes, the humor of the name was never lost on me) is only about 7 mins from my mom's house. It is paved and one mile from one end to another. Many people come here to walk, run, bike, rollerblade, whatever. Where else are you going to get a nice flat mile with no cars?

There wasn't anyone else out when I went though.
The place is right next to the family farmland, so I used to come here a lot to play when I was a kid. There are also trails in the woods and other recreational areas. When I was older, it was a good place to run in the off-season of Cross Country. It was also a great place for a summertime romantic tryst with a young justgotspaid.... sigh.... so many fond memories.
Because I fancy myself a badass, I decided to go during the start of the only snowstorm we had. I took my aunt walking with me another time. Walking 4 miles every morning seemed to keep the Christmastime cold away. Success!

Another tradition is going to see my cousins play basketball. They play on opposing teams, so it is really interesting. Here, my cuz, Katie got a MVP award!!
A lot of the family tree always shows up. Cousins on the left foreground going diagonally up. Me, bro and dad on the right.
Another day, I met my cousin LeeAnn and my aunt at my favorite sub shop ever! It burned down last year, but they are rebuilt and up and running now. This made my day.

Then LeeAnn wanted me to see her boyfriend's state of the art dairy farm. Here I am wearing all Carhart overalls and boots with one of her cows during milking time.

She knows I am into humane farming, so she was eager to show me how nicely the place is run, with footbaths, massage machines and bigger pens. No veal crates here
Calfs are so cute.
Out to lunch with another set of cousins. Here, Jackie is only 12 and already 5'6". I am definitely the runt of the litter. Why is everyone else in my family so tall?

I always end up going to the Elks Lodge with my dad for drinks. I decided to try Pennsylvania Duth Egg Nog liquor once (while wearing my dad's fake raccoon hat). Actually not bad at all.

I tried a new beer there too. This was almost strong enough to put me into a full hibernation. I liked it because at least the person on the bottle got to go snowshoeing or XC skiiing.

I'm always in the Charlotte Airport. Every year they have this great Poinsettia display.
I got a cocktail to celebrate the new year.
Top 5 favorite moments of XMAS 2011
1) having a real heart-to-heart with my dad after a trip to the Elks
2) seeing my brother's office at this new job. I'm so happy that he is doing well.
3) having coffee with my cousin, Tenae. We are so alike. I found another person who hates eye appointments as much as I do.
4) taking my mom for her first manicure. That went over well!
5) One of my cousins recently got really into family history. He came over and gave me all this info. I found out that not only can I apply to be a Daughter of the American Revolution, but I AM a lot SCOTTISH!!! How cool is that!? No wonder I like bagpipes and tartan so much.
What a great break!
