  • more of the same

NorKor captured a fishing boat and has been firing shots near the S. Korean border.  I wonder what they think they will gain from this other than attention.  Negative attention. read more

El_nor moved away from me.  Boo!  But it's a good move for her professionally.  I guess that it what living in a college town is all about-- watching your friends move away.  I wonder if I will be here forever only to die in Shands Hospital?

At least T&A are back from a trip.

Situation 1:  Tomorrow I must decide whether or not to start taking Turkish.  I think I will use my lunch break time for class--plus the benefit is that it is offered through my department, so no cross-departmental wrangling.  It means no lunch break (no lunch dates) unless I want to take time off--maybe.  More work.  More shit to worry about and think about when I try to leave town for a bit.  But, if I am serious about self-betterment and trying to get some sort of USA.gov type job someday, then learning a strategic language couldn't hurt.

    What would you do?

Situation 2:  This woman at work, who is my superior (not Boss A, but friends with Boss A), and for whatever reason seems to have taken a shine to me, emailed me a job listing.  Its for more responsibilities/ a lot more pay in a different section of the University.  I wonder why she sent it?  I don't have the required amount experience, but I'm flattered she would think of me.  Then, I second-guess myself;  Is my boss trying to get rid of me?  Is this a subtle nudge?  Why do I take every little workplace email so seriously-- like its some sort of mind-game?  Is this is the result of having worked in Japan?  So I guess I should just apply?

    What would you do?

  • Where has this been?

So today I learned from THIS article in the Atlantic that some guy in Spain has created an official North Korean website.  It's worth checking out just to see all the pictures.  It's amazing that he has made so many trips there, has all these photos and has the balls to post them...  actually nothing is really incriminating.  I haven't seen any starving people yet, but still.

I have to post this one from his 2008 trip:

Check out all those Kimjongilia begonias!

  • Labor camps and land mines

While it looks like the NorKor Soccer team is getting off with just a round of public humiliation, the coach has reportedly been sent to a labor camp.  Good luck finding another coach.  If NorKor hasn't collapsed by then, I predict their next World Cup appearance won't be until at least 2030.

Also, one man is dead and another injured after attempting to take home two boxes containing landmines that had washed up from North Korea.  It could be the hard rains or.... could NorKor also be purposely floating these things down the river?  A little passive-aggressive response to the recent joint U.S., Japan and S. Korean war games (saber rattling)  I wouldn't put it passed them.
